Abstract: Internet of Things (IoT) term deals with the ability of network devices to sense and collect data from around the world, and then share that data across the Internet where it can be processed and utilized for various purposes. Sensors can be implemented for the instrumentation and monitoring of various changes in the environment which have been defined to be useful. These terms played various roles in the development of this project work which was the design and implementation of a proximity sensor-controlled switch using Internet of Things (IoT) technology. This project implemented a model which broke down the development process into several phases. Arduino IDE which implemented C++, Java and Python programming languages was used to write the program codes of the proposed system. The system developed was an automated switching system for electrical/electronic devices controlled by an Arduino microcontroller through which a proximity sensor as well as a 5v relay module were connected. The proximity sensor detected motion and sent Boolean signals to the microcontroller which instructed the relay on whether to send electricity through the circuit or not from the signals transmitted by the proximity sensor. There was no need to design the modules as they all came pre-designed and pre-programmed. After the development of the proposed system, the results showed that when movement was detected by the proximity sensor, the relay which was the electrical current bridge was made to send electricity to the specified appliance/device (i.e a 60W light bulb) and it came on as expected from the system. This played a very important role in solving the problem of wastage of electrical power and helped to eliminate the disadvantages associated with manual switches. This project work was more like a test implementation of the system so only lightweight equipments (modules of the actual industrial equipments) and mid-voltage appliances were used to avoid any hazard caused from higher voltage loads but can still be implemented on an industrial and commercial scale. So, in conclusion, from the proper analysis and assessment of the designed system it wassafely concluded that the system was an efficient, usable and reliable automated switching system. It worked properly and adequately met all expectations that were for it initially.
