Adult cicadas typically live 2–6 weeks depending on species and conditions. During this brief period, their energy is directed toward flight, calling, mating, and egg-laying. Captive attempts to feed adults often fail because they require xylem-rich fluid from trees or shrubs, not standard artificial diets used for many pet insects.

Mesh enclosures designed for flying insects can allow escape, and handling increases stress and decreases survival time. Stable warmth and moderate humidity are important for cicada activity and molting success. Outdoors, they experience daily and seasonal cycles that influence behavior and development. Indoors, artificial heat and lighting can disrupt natural rhythms and reduce longevity. Providing appropriate host material for egg-laying is especially complex; many twig-laying species require fresh twigs from their preferred trees, which is difficult to maintain consistently in captivity.

Flight and Stress Management

Cicadas are strong fliers and can become stressed in confined or turbulent air conditions. Stress can lead to rapid declines, torn wings, or inability to feed. Because they are not social in the way that ants or bees are, keeping multiple individuals together can increase aggression or competition for space. Netted outdoor observation cages can allow temporary viewing but are not designed for permanent captivity.

Ethics and Responsible Observation

Observing cicadas in their natural habitat supports conservation awareness and allows you to witness behaviors such as calling, molting, and egg-laying without harm. If you wish to study or photograph them, use quiet approaches, minimal handling, and release individuals promptly. Cultivating native trees and shrubs that support cicada nymphs can create long-term habitat benefits. Avoid collecting nymphs or adults for confinement, as this can deplete local populations and is often discouraged by ecological guidelines.

Realistic Alternatives

If your interest is in long-term insect companionship or observation, consider species that are more suitable for captivity, such as certain beetles, mantises, or stick insects that are bred in captivity and have manageable care requirements. For cicada-specific engagement, focus on seasonal observation in gardens or parks, participation in citizen science projects mapping emergence, or creating cicada-friendly landscapes with appropriate host plants. These approaches provide educational value and enjoyment without the welfare and logistical challenges of keeping cicadas as pets.
