Planned architectural height and symbolic intent
Jeddah Tower is designed as a vertical city milestone with a planned architectural tip height of approximately 1,000 meters (about 3,280 feet). Originally conceived as part of the linear Jeddah waterfront development, the tower aimed to become the world’s tallest building upon completion. Its height is intended to support mixed-use functions, including luxury residences, hotel space, observation decks, and office areas. The form follows a stepped, tapering silhouetted designed to respond to wind and structural loads at extreme elevations. This section explains how the target height fits into long-term urban vision and why the scheme remains a reference point for tall-building planning.
Design approach for extreme height
At around 1,000 meters, conventional structural approaches are not feasible. The tower employs a bundled core concept, where several reinforced concrete and steel cores are interconnected with perimeter columns. This geometry creates stiffness while allowing flexible floor plates. Engineers addressed progressive-damping effects, serviceability vibrations, and elevator logistics for ultra-high-rise travel. Setbacks and tapering are used strategically to reduce lateral forces and to frame city and sea views. The below-ground section includes multiple levels of parking, service access, and connections to transit infrastructure, anchoring the tower into its site.
