Current Status of Northern White Rhinos at the San Diego Zoo
As of now, the San Diego Zoo does not house any northern white rhinos on public display. The species is functionally extinct in the wild, with only two known females remaining, both under human care in Ol Pejeta Conservancy in Kenya. At San Diego Zoo, the focus has shifted to conservation genetics, research, and the Frozen Zoo®, which preserves genetic material from many species, including the northern white rhino, for potential future recovery efforts.
History of Northern White Rhinos at San Diego Zoo
Past Residents and Breeding Efforts
San Diego Zoo previously cared for northern white rhinos as part of dedicated conservation breeding programs. The last male, Angalifu, died in 2014, and the last female, Nola, died in 2015. These losses marked the end of the zoo’s direct breeding population but reinforced the urgency of genetic banking and assisted reproductive technologies.
Conservation Genetics and the Frozen Zoo®
Preserving Genetic Diversity
The Frozen Zoo® is a critical resource in rhino conservation. San Diego Zoo Wildlife Alliance maintains cell lines, DNA samples, and other biomaterials from northern white rhinos and other endangered species. These materials support research into reproduction, disease resilience, and, potentially, de-extinction or recovery strategies using advanced reproductive technologies.
Scientific Research and Assisted Reproduction
Advancing Techniques for Survival
Researchers are exploring in vitro fertilization, embryo transfer, and other assisted reproductive technologies using genetic material from stored samples. Efforts involve collaboration across institutions to maximize genetic diversity and improve techniques that may one day help rebuild a viable population, should such a recovery become feasible.
What Visitors Should Know
- Northern white rhinos are not on exhibit at the San Diego Zoo.
- Conservation work continues through research, genetics, and partnerships.
- Learn about related species, such as southern white rhinos, which remain in protected areas and are more numerous.
- Support wildlife conservation by contributing to accredited institutions focused on evidence-based recovery programs.
